Mounted (and Unmounted) Infantry

This is just a short update being as this is the very last day – indeed the very last hours – of the ‘paint what you already own’ challenge by Ann’s Immaterium blog. I’ve not completed them to deadline, but considering they were started after I’d first finished Napoleon’s Old Guard mid-month, I’ve made good progress.

Detail on these HaT figures is a little vague here and there, but I’ve done my best to pick out as much as I can. Never HaT’s strongest point, the horses sculpting are acceptable rather than great, but they’ll do.

The Imperial Mounted Infantry would have looked a little rough and ready. In a muted painting style, I’ve tried to hint at this dusty and threadbare chic and also aim to add a little dust on to their boots when basing.

A private of the 90th Foot in the uniform of the Imperial Mounted Infantry.

Retaining his regimental tunic, he wears corduroy riding breeches, a leather bandolier instead of a belt, riding boots with spurs and carries a Swinburne-Henry carbine.

In my squadron, I’ve included representatives from some of the different regiments which supplied 1st squadron, Imperial Mounted Infantry with troops: mostly the 24th Foot (green facings) and the 80th, (red with yellow collar tabs), but also a few from the 3rd Foot (buff), and the 13th Light Infantry (dark blue).

The mounted poses look perfect for vedettes and scouts, a key role of the MI. Virtually all of their fighting would have been done on foot as infantry, so it’s good there’s some nice dismounted poses too.

This rediscovered old box of figures seems to be missing five horses and until I find replacements, some will have to remain ‘unmounted mounted infantry’:

“Which way to the remount depot…?’

So, they’re not based yet and I may even stall that process until I find some extra horses for them but I’ve glued some on to spare off-cuts of plastic card ready for when I do! At least, after nearly a decade, these accidental equestrians have finally been painted!

Hopefully, an improvement from my first attempt?

  1. Cheers John. 🙂 That’s my favourite pose too. I’ve got some Hat Natal Native Horse too stowed away somewhere, so maybe I’ll add more to my Zulu War theme at some point.

  2. A huge improvement, Marvin. It’s nice to see how far your painting has improved. As always, those are beautifully done figures.

    1. Thanks Bill. Well, I’ve had enough practice since I did those earlier ones! 🙂 The men are nicely done but the horses, less so.

  3. Yes, those horses heads really aren’t quite right are they and I didn’t feel I could do much with them to make them look normal! The riders look better though.

There’s something nicely piratical / bandit about bandoliers that I do like.

  4. Very nice and I agree with John and the others that they came out nice. I like how you paint horses in general; that is something I’ve never done unless you count slapping some some craft store paint on My Little Ponies with the little ones. 🙂

    1. Thank you Ann 🙂 I do enjoy painting horses – but I didn’t enjoy these ones so much as the faces are a little oddly sculpted.

My Little Ponies? Sounds like great fun and you’ve got start them somewhere! 🙂

      1. Yes, I it is a good time introducing young people to one’s hobbies, especially when they seem interested. 🙂

      2. No success in getting my daughter interested in military modelling miniatures but she’s recently showing an interest in D&D, so maybe there’s hope yet.

  5. Even though it came in perhaps a little too late for the April challenge, I do think the image of a soldier leading his horse would make a nice, tiny bit of filler art. So made it into a little 200 pixel wide “ink sketch,” that I’d like to include at the very end of the wrap up. The post is going to be huge and long, and I think the image somehow seems like it would be a suitable, appropriate filler.

      1. Whichever you prefer is absolutely fine with me! 🙂

Thanks for the whole challenge idea – I really enjoyed the focus it gave me on painting some stuff I’d otherwise ‘maybe get around to at some point in the future 🙄

    1. An ink sketch? That sounds interesting! It was indeed all a bit last minute and I still haven’t finished it anyway, so I wasn’t expecting inclusion with them. You could say I was simply inspired by your challenge to have another go at them.

I’m sure your artwork will make it look great! 🙂

      1. What I mean by “ink sketch” is that I apply a filter from my bare bones Paint program to make the picture look a little like an “ink sketch.” Real ink sketches, alas are beyond my powers. I should have been more clear.

What I was planning was using your picture of the soldier leading the horse and the picture of Napoleon to make some tiny scatter art that I use to break up paragraphs and the like.

If you look at the tiny picture of the cat, which is the first picture in the March round-up post, that is the sort of thing I mean:

      2. I’m glad you like the cat. She’ll be glad to hear it, being a vain, preening creature like most of her ilk, at least the pampered ones. 🙂

I wish I had the skill to bust out the old pencils! That is one of those things that I’d like to be better at but don’t seem (so far) to want to put in the work. Maybe someday.

  6. I’m glad you enjoyed the challenge and it helped you get some miniatures done that you might not have otherwise. I also find painting challenges good for that. Sometimes I have a problem of abandoning projects completely about half way through, and oftentimes a painting challenge will be the spur I need to see it through.

I think I’d like to make tiny, scatter pictures out of both of them; nothing big on my end but I think they’ll add visual interest to the post.

    1. Sounds great to me. I look forward to seeing your post with all the other completed submissions.

I find the old blog (and other peoples) helps keep me on track most of the time but when ya run out of steam, well, there’s no point turning a hobby into chore!

      1. Oh yes, I agree, there is a line between completing what you start and not having a bunch of projects going that you never finish and grimly hanging on working away and turning something that is supposed to be fun into work. I agree completely. 🙂

I’m working away on the round-up. I hope to have it done over the weekend. It is going to be a really long post; the longest by far of anything I’ve ever done on my blog. I’m wondering if this happens again in future challenges if it might not be better to do several round-up posts in “volumes”? I don’t really know, so I think I’m going to ask what people think at the end of this round-up.

      2. Hehe, yeah, it is turning out to be a fun project but one that is turning out to be larger than I expected. 🙂

I like that video you did by the way. I’d like to include it in the round-up if you don’t mind.

      3. Yes, of course that’s fine. 🙂 Hopefully, it will be viewed as not being serious. It made me giggle to hear the very dramatic delivery of Napoleon’s lines by Rod Steiger over close ups of my little plastic men!

      4. I think you did a good job with it. I’m sure even Quizzical Soldier would agree! (I just finished your section. Only like 10 or 12 more people to go, lol.

      5. Well, it is a fun project. Taking a rough count I think it is going to be 25 or 26 people this time.

I’m going to put it all in one mammoth post, but I’m wondering if something like this happens in the future if I should break it up into several sections?

        Liked by 1 person

      6. Sounds like that might be a good plan. Less stress for you for one thing. Perhaps you could group sections together by some vague themes?

      7. That’s not a bad idea. I think I am going to split it into two posts after all, so I can at least get part one out before the weekend.

I think going by themes, like maybe even Historical and SciFi/Fantasy might not be a bad idea.

I think perhaps for the future I might put a bit less work into each entry, though for this time I mean to go on as I started. 🙂
